2019 Holiday Tour of Homes

The table is set with elegant china, crystal and silver and hundreds of twinkling votives. Soft breezes from the Skidaway River gently rustle the Spanish moss hanging from the Live Oaks overhead. Music fills the air and you are surrounded by friends. It’s a wonderful night…here out on the lawn. With a rich history that extends all the way down to its furniture and accessories, this is a home with more than a few stories to tell.

The massive custom corkboard features a frame Jaakkola had fashioned from strips of wood she picked up on a whim at an antiques show. Following the Civil War, formerly enslaved African Americans from Wormsloe Plantation established a settlement inland around Parkersburg Road. Modern day filmmakers have taken advantage of Isle of Hope’s varying architecture of this time, which ranges from Greek Revival, Victorian Eclectic, Neoclassical, and Craftsman/Bungalow. It’s no surprise that these historic structures and timeless water views have been featured in period pieces and modern shows alike. Set far back from the street, a row of Japanese crab apple trees leads to the one-storey brick cottage.

I love the smell of the air when i get off the plane…so rich and humid! These homes are breathtaking, especially the pretty little turquoise one. The home's ample yard space allowed the family to enjoy the rural benefit of living off the land. Raised-bed vegetable gardens maintained by Jaakkola and her two daughters supply the family's kitchen with everything from Meyer lemons to lettuce and sweet potatoes. An upstairs bedroom strayed from the home's primarily subdued palette with neon accents and wood floors painted Benjamin Moore's Arctic Blue.

How To Decorate Your Porch Year-Round

The picturesque setting of Isle of Hope has been well preserved by film’s time capsule for over 60 years. From Bluff Drive’s sun-dappled view of the Skidaway river, to the historic homes that charm the riverside community, it’s impossible to deny Isle of Hope’s cinematic appeal. This two-storey frame vernacular cottage was built with its gable facing the street. This, like the cottage at 25 Brown Street , exhibits the character of cottages of this period in history, which aspired to a classical style temple. This is further developed with a wrap-around porch with classical details in the columns with capitals. A metal roof adds much to the charm of this ground level porch.

Now, it provides additional bedrooms and a parlour leading out to a terrace overlooking the ravine. Port Hope is blessed with having a wonderful collection of Ontario Cottages. These one-storey cottages are deceiving. Due to Port Hope’s hilly topography, most have “walkout” basements, thus making them more like 2-storey houses.

English Town was an almost separate community at the top of the hill.

Today, the Mayberry-like suburb hosts a healthy crowd of full-time residents drawn to the community's quiet existence and water-centric lifestyle. From the Jaakkola's front porch, live oaks dripping with Spanish moss frame sweeping views of the Skidaway River, where a parade of private docks serve as frequent community gathering spots. "The neighbors are always getting together here on the docks to go crabbing, fishing, or just watch the sunset," says Jaakkola. "That's just what you do for fun and it never gets old." One of the best ways to experience the architecture and serenity of Isle of Hope is to take a walk along Bluff Drive, which with its moss-hung live oaks and historic homes is one of the highlights of the town.

It’s been about a year or so I think since I first saw that listing and I don’t think there were as many pictures back then. This would be a good one to post a tour of on the blog. Looks like a great place to go exploring. I can't wait to see Part II of your post.

"I like a soothing palette that allows the artwork and antiques to shine," says Jaakkola. Suspended above the enormous custom-made zinc island-on-wheels by local artist Tim Adams is a group of mixed and matched chandeliers and pendants Jaakkola sourced at antique marts from Savannah to New York. "When things appear collected it helps give a room that old, authentic feel," she says.

The car is usually the preferred way to navigate this municipality. It is especially convenient to access a parking spot. This part of the Savannah metropolitan area is not very well-suited for walking as many daily needs are inconvenient to meet without the use of a car. Information deemed reliable but not guaranteed.
