"I like for my house to be comfortable and fun for my family and friends," she says. But for the Jaakkolas and their two daughters, outdoor assets were only half the attraction. For Jaakkola, these imperfections were badges to be embraced. So the avid preservationist set out to restore and renovate the home to honor its past while still creating a fresh and functional space for her modern-day family. The result is a laid-back Lowcountry retreat dripping with character. On the inside, one-of-a-kind local artwork mixes with eclectic antiques and natural wonders.
The car is usually the preferred way to navigate this municipality. It is especially convenient to access a parking spot. This part of the Savannah metropolitan area is not very well-suited for walking as many daily needs are inconvenient to meet without the use of a car. Information deemed reliable but not guaranteed. Home #6 | Circa 187095 Charles Street
Just outside the entrance to the marina, a street ran along the edge of the marina and the river. It was lined with homes that had us oohing and ahhing. There were too many wonderful homes to share in one post so I’ll share the rest in a second post tomorrow morning. As wonderful as these are, the homes in the second post turned out to be my favorites, so you’ll definitely want to see Part II of this Isle of Hope home tour. I'm in love love love with the house at the end of the street with the different blues.
To me that is the most beautiful place ever. Off the kitchen is a keeping room that serves as the default cocktail lounge when guests come over and is an example of Jaakkola's knack for combining styles, textures, and materials effortlessly. "I love really modern elements and very old things with patina, and I think when you put them together in a room, they capture your interest even more," she says. Here, industrial metal end tables are juxtaposed with delicate glass lamps and a casual slipcovered settee. The rugged wood-topped cocktail table and botanical artwork (both scored at Atlanta's South of Market) connect the whole setup to the outdoors.

Due to height restrictions in Port Hope, the reassembled house was reduced in height by one log, making it a single storey house with loft. Behind a delightful, classically-inspired frame Ontario Cottage is a log cabin. The log cabin is a 2-storey vernacular cabin moved from Dunvegan, Ontario, north of Kingston. It was disassembled, numbered and reassembled twice to ensure how it would be put together.

Subsequently known as the Temperance Hotel, the building was partitioned into a duplex in the mid-20th century and converted back to a single dwelling bed and breakfast in the 1980s. Wow Heidi, you are just such a talent! I love the pops of red and this beautifully decorated dining room. Most areas in Isle of Hope are very quiet, as noise from streets and other parts of the city is rarely an issue.
What are the schools and amenities like in Isle of Hope?
This home has many great features including a backside two car garage, with additional covered parking for two more cars. Also covered parking could be used as a workspace. Above garage is a bonus room with built in bar. Also separate storage 12 X10 with additional covered space for more lawn equipment storage. Great fixer upper or investment for rental.
Normally, I prefer to see screened-in porches on the back of the home; but the view of the marina and Skidaway River across the road makes having the screened-in porch on the front a great idea. I have always dreamed to live somewhere where I could have it. People that have it don't always like it as it does kill trees sometimes. There is nothing more Romantic than Spanish Moss blowing in the gentle breeze. This house was a fun surprise at the end of the street.
To up the curb appeal even more, she swapped Victorian-style railings for simpler white ones and painted the front door powder blue —a nod to the home's setting on the water. "Our goal was to keep everything as close to original as possible," she says. Come see this Darling 3/2 home with enclosed den added for great family space or sun room.

The predominant housing types in Isle of Hope are single detached homes and townhouses. The buildings in this municipality are quite old, because around 40% of its dwellings were built in the 1960s and 1970s, while most of the remaining buildings were built pre-1960 and in the 1990s. This part of the Savannah metropolitan area is particularly good for those looking for three bedroom homes.
Circa 186933 Pine Street NI grew up right there off Bluff Drive by the marina and walked or rode my bike up and down it every day. One of the few things I miss about living in Chatham County. This home has a big screened-in porch.
Productions utilize local businesses and services, while renting adjacent properties to support the show’s large footprint. In Isle of Hope, those ancillary rentals have utilized Isle of Hope Marina, Villa Marie Center, Isle of Hope Baptist, Isle of Hope Methodist, and St. Thomas Episcopal Church as production basecamps. While local restaurants like The Driftaway Café in neighboring Sandfly become crew favorites for a quick bite during scouts, tech scouts, and filming days. Unusual to this Church is the pairing of the double front Gothic peaked front doors, above which hang two Gothic peaked windows. This is an unusual duality, where typical Anglican churches celebrate the Trinity. The cabin was a 2-storey log house with a main body and side wing with side porch.
Circa 184125 Brown StreetCurrently set up as a duplex, could be a single family home; or live in one side and rent the other side. UNIT A is UNDER CONSTRUCTION; Seller is in the process of working on some wonderful renovations. UNIT B is ready for a tenant or new owner.
Susan, everytime we drive on IOH I expect to see Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer sauntering along that road, fishing pole in tow. The 17th pic down, the one story home, is just exactly what i imagine for Scout, Jem, and Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird. Very "Deep South" pics, and all lovely. I'm in love with each and every one of these homes, Susan. We don't have anything remotely close to that style here, I just adore them though. So when I stroll through your amazing sharings I usually don't get envious – I love what all thse people create.
Outdoors, they kick back in patio chairs hand-hewn from an ancient live oak that was on the property. The house is a symmetrical plan with a central entrance. Originally, the front hall was flanked with parlours, but since renovation, one side is a large open kitchen and living area. Large 6 over 6 windows light the space and lead to the south where French doors lead to a deck overlooking the ravine to the south.
I've always wanted to visit Savannah so I thank you for sharing the photographs of your trip with us. Thanks so much for sharing your trip to Savannah. You did a great job of photographing all these beautiful homes. I am a regular reader of your blog-although I don't usually leave comments. With the opening of the railways, the coaching inn was no longer needed. It was torn down and the Albion Inn built in its place.
